The great hall at the back of the precinct
The Horyuji Temple Great Lecture Hall (法隆寺大講堂, Hōryū-ji Daikōdō) in Ikaruga, Nara Prefecture, is a Heian-period hall rebuilt in 990, first protected on April 5, 1899, and designated a National Treasure on June 9, 1951. It stands well behind the Golden Hall and pagoda at the north end of the Western Precinct, with the corridors joining it on both sides.
Nine bays wide and four deep, with a single hip-and-gable tiled roof, it dwarfs the Golden Hall. Monks gathered here to study and hear the sutras expounded. Its predecessor was struck by lightning and burned with the Bell Tower in 925; the present building went up 65 years later.
A hall that grew by one bay
The Horyuji lecture hall was not always nine bays wide. Both the first building and the 990 rebuild were eight bays. A lean-to was added on the west in the Middle Ages, and repairs in the Genroku era absorbed it, moving the west columns to make a nine-bay hall. The great Showa-era restoration returned the eaves, roof frame and fittings to their 990 form but left the ninth bay in place.
That westernmost bay is where the building's layers of history overlap. Count the bays from the front and compare the spacing on each side, and the alteration begins to show.
Nara style, made Japanese
The hall sits on a stone-faced platform. Its brackets are simple three-block sets, with a single post block between columns. In the core, beams of horseshoe-shaped section carry a great rainbow beam; the outer aisles show their rafters, while the core has a coffered ceiling hung below the beam. At the back is a three-bay screen wall and altar.
The roof tells you the date. Above the visible rafters sits a separate hidden frame that sets the roof pitch, a step away from Nara-period practice toward a more Japanese way of building. Lath woven over the rafters, with clay infill between them, is another feature of this hall.
At the center sits the Yakushi Triad made for the rebuilding: a seated Yakushi about 2.5 meters high flanked by the bodhisattvas Nikkō and Gakkō, with a pair of high preaching seats used in ceremonies. Curiously, the temple inventory of 747 lists no lecture hall, while its refectory matches this building's size, a hint that the hall's origins are more tangled than they look.
