A bathhouse for the monks, 1605
The Horyuji Temple Great Bathhouse (法隆寺大湯屋, Hōryū-ji Ōyuya) in Ikaruga, Nara Prefecture, is a Momoyama-period bathhouse built in 1605 and designated an Important Cultural Property on December 22, 1942. It stands in the sub-temple block in the southwest corner of the Western Precinct, with its front gate opening in the wall to the north.
Six bays by four, it is single-storey with a gabled tile roof, entered from the gable end (tsumairi) with a one-bay canopy across the front.
Why a temple bathhouse matters
Large monasteries often kept bathhouses where monks could cleanse themselves, a matter of daily hygiene and also of ritual purification before ceremonies. The Horyuji Great Bathhouse preserves such a building, part of the infrastructure of temple life, as it stood in 1605.
That date falls at the turn from the Momoyama to the Edo period, a time of much repair across the temple, and the firm date adds to its value. With the early Muromachi front gate, both the gate and the building of the bath survive.
What to look for
The gable end faces front, sheltered by a one-bay canopy. A triangular gable as the face of a building reads very differently from a hall that shows you its eaves, and the canopy is a practical shelter for coming and going.
The tiled gable roof blends with the tiled walls of the surrounding sub-temples, giving the southwest block its quiet character.
