A Momoyama residence in a sub-temple
The Saionin Guest Hall (西園院客殿, Saion-in Kyakuden) in Horyuji Sannai, Ikaruga, Nara Prefecture, is the reception hall of the Saionin sub-temple of Horyuji, built in the Momoyama period, between 1573 and 1614, and designated an Important Cultural Property on December 22, 1942. The national database classifies it as a residence.
It measures 11.9 meters by 12.8 meters, single-storey, with a hip-and-gable roof on the north side and a plain gable on the south, covered in cedar bark.
What a guest hall is
A kyakuden is where a temple's head priest receives and entertains visitors. Unlike a hall for worship, it is built much like a house. Most designated buildings at Horyuji are halls and gates; the Saionin Guest Hall is listed as a residence, valuable as a record of temple life and hospitality.
The Saionin Agetsuchimon was designated on the same day in 1942, and the Karamon and the walls linking the gates followed the next year, so the gates, walls and guest hall of Saionin have been recognized together.
What the exterior tells you
The roof changes shape from north to south: hip-and-gable on the north, plain gable on the south, two forms combined in one building.
Cedar-bark roofing is also unusual at Horyuji, where tile and cypress bark dominate. Its rustic texture signals a dwelling rather than a hall.
Visiting
Saionin is not open to the public, and the Saionin Guest Hall cannot be visited. From the approach you can see the sub-temple's Agetsuchimon and Karamon gates.
