Sesonji Temple Front Gate: heavy posts at the roadside entrance
Sesonji Temple Front Gate (世尊寺表門, Sesonji Omotemon) is a late-Edo-period bracket-arm gate, or udegimon, at the head of the approach to Sesonji Temple, a Nichiren Buddhist temple in the Takeda district of Sado City, Niigata Prefecture; thought to have been built around 1800, it became a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2006 under registration number 15-0210.
It stands at the north corner of the precinct facing the road, the first gate visitors pass through. It is a single-bay gate 3.6 m wide with a Kirizuma-zukuri gable roof of Sangawara-buki tiles.
Dating a gate without records
No document records when Sesonji Temple Front Gate was built. One clue is an illustration in Essa Hōkan, a book published in the Meiji period, which shows a front gate in the same position as today. That puts a gate on this spot at least by the Meiji era.
The other clue is how far the timbers have weathered. Weighing the two, Sado City puts construction around 1800. The national database likewise assigns it to the late Edo period, giving a range of 1751 to 1829.
It was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape: the thick posts give the entrance to the precinct a solid, weighty presence.
Bracket arms and a plank ceiling
The frame of Sesonji Temple Front Gate is two main posts, each with a supporting post set before and behind, tied together by beams run through the main posts. Bracket arms projecting from the main posts carry the eave beams and pass the weight of the roof into the posts. The bracket-arm gate is among the plainest temple gate types; here, thick posts give it weight when seen from the road.
The underside of the roof is worth a look. Thick planks span between the ridge beam and the eave beams and are left exposed as the finished ceiling. Step under the gate and look up, and the plank surface descends unbroken toward the eaves.
The official descriptions mention no carving. Posts and planks carry the design on their own, and set beside the painted, carved Red Gate in front of the Main Hall, the difference in character between the two gates is plain to see.

Sesonji Temple Front Gate faces the road, so its front can be seen before you enter. The relation between main and supporting posts is easiest to read from the side. Once under the gate, look up at the plank ceiling.
The gate is outdoors and needs no arrangement to visit. The temple gives no guidance on photography; the road runs right in front, so watch for traffic when choosing where to stand.
