Sesonji Temple Red Gate: a painted four-legged gate before the Main Hall
Sesonji Temple Red Gate (世尊寺赤門, Sesonji Akamon) is a mid-Edo-period Shikyakumon, or four-legged gate, standing directly in front of the Main Hall of Sesonji Temple, a Nichiren Buddhist temple in the Takeda district of Sado City, Niigata Prefecture, and it became a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2006 under registration number 15-0212.
It sits in the southern part of the precinct, on the axis of the east-facing Main Hall. The opening is 3.3 m wide and the roof is a Kirizuma-zukuri gable laid with Sangawara-buki tiles. The national database places it in the middle Edo period, between 1661 and 1750, the earliest date range among the six registered buildings.
A Zen-style frame with its own twists
Sesonji Temple Red Gate was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes it as based on Zenshūyō, the Zen style of building introduced from China in the Kamakura period, yet showing distinctive techniques and design throughout.
A four-legged gate has two main posts, each with a supporting post in front and behind, six posts in all. Here every post is round and finished with chimaki, the tapered ends characteristic of the Zen style, and the posts are locked together with penetrating tie beams.
On the transverse tie beam stands a Taiheizuka, a vase-shaped strut that carries the purlin. The ridge beam, purlins and eave beams are then linked with Ebi-kōryō, curved beams that bridge between members at different heights and take their name from the arched back of a shrimp. The bracketing is the simple hira-mitsudo type, three bearing blocks on a single arm.

For the gate itself, walk round to a gable end to see the carved end boards, then stand beneath it and look up at the stepped shrimp beams.
The gate stands in the open and can be seen once you are inside the grounds. The temple gives no guidance on photography; while a service is under way in the Main Hall, hold off on photographs in front of the gate.
