Sesonji Temple Shoin: four tatami rooms under a tall roof
Sesonji Temple Shoin (世尊寺書院, Sesonji Shoin) is the shoin, a wing of formal tatami rooms, of Sesonji Temple, a Nichiren Buddhist temple in the Takeda district of Sado City, Niigata Prefecture; a single-storey timber building thought to date from the late Meiji period, it became a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2006 under registration number 15-0209.
It stands at the end of a corridor running out of the northwest corner of the Main Hall, and the two buildings work as a pair. Sesonji Temple Shoin measures 9 m across and 10 m deep, a building area of 104 square meters, under an Irimoya-zukuri hip-and-gable roof of Sangawara-buki tiles. Glazed sliding doors enclose its outer walls.
No record of its construction date has been published. Judging from documents, the condition of the timbers and the building methods, Sado City places it at the same time as the Main Hall.
A roof built for presence
Sesonji Temple Shoin was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs singles out the roof, raised high to give the building a dignified air.
The plan is slightly deeper than it is wide, 10 m against 9 m, close to a square. Put a hip-and-gable roof over a plan like that and the ridge climbs naturally. That height is what keeps a single-storey wing from being swallowed up beside the much larger Main Hall.
Rooms named for birds and flowers
Inside Sesonji Temple Shoin, four tatami rooms are arranged roughly two by two. Sado City gives their names: the yellow bird (黄鳥), the bellflower (桔梗), the bush clover (萩) and the hawk (鷹), two birds and two flowers.
The Hawk Room has a Tokonoma alcove 2 ken wide, broad for a tatami room, and it is the only one of the four whose alcove the descriptions record.
A veranda runs round all four rooms, and the glazed doors close off its outer edge, putting one more layer between the rooms and the open air.
Seeing Sesonji Temple Shoin
Sesonji Temple Shoin lies northwest of the Main Hall, and the path past the Household Goods Storehouse leads toward it. From outside, look for the height of the roof and the long run of glazed doors around the veranda.
The Shoin is used for temple business, and no conditions for viewing the interior are announced; to see the rooms, arrange it with the temple beforehand. The temple gives no guidance on photography, but please do not photograph the rooms through the glass.
