Sesonji Temple Household Goods Storehouse: torii-shaped window frames from 1831
Sesonji Temple Household Goods Storehouse (世尊寺家財蔵, Sesonji Kazaigura) is a two-storey timber storehouse in the precinct of Sesonji Temple, a Nichiren Buddhist temple in the Takeda district of Sado City, Niigata Prefecture, built in 1831 and made a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2006 under registration number 15-0214.
Temple documents record its construction in 1831 and its move to the present site in 1887. Where it stood before is not stated in the published sources.
The name kazaigura marks it as a store for household goods, the everyday furnishings and utensils of the temple, kept apart from the treasures held in the separate Treasure House.
Beside the path at the centre of the precinct
Sesonji Temple Household Goods Storehouse stands near the middle of the precinct, beside the path that leads to the Shoin. It measures 6.5 m across and 4.5 m deep, a building area of 30 square meters, with a Kirizuma-zukuri gable roof of Sangawara-buki tiles. Lean-tos, or Geya, are attached on the south and west sides.
It was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. Its white wall faces the path and forms part of the scene along the way between the Front Gate and the Main Hall and Shoin.
Two finishes, front and side
The front, facing the path, is finished in white Shikkui lime plaster, while the sides and other walls are clad in overlapping Shitami-itabari weatherboards. The face people see is plastered; the rest is protected with boards.
The most careful detail on Sesonji Temple Household Goods Storehouse is on the upper floor. Around each window the plasterer modelled a raised frame in the shape of a torii gate, its top bar projecting like the lintel of a shrine gateway. The Agency for Cultural Affairs calls it careful workmanship.
The structure is recorded as timber, not the thick clay-walled Dozo-zukuri construction of the Treasure House in the same precinct.

Sesonji Temple Household Goods Storehouse faces the path, so the plastered front and upper windows come into view as you walk toward the Shoin. The torii-shaped frames sit at second-floor height and read best from a few steps back. Walk to the side to see the weatherboarding.
