A Hall Built for Six Days a Year
Honganji Yokkaichi Betsuin Assembly Hall was built around 1915 at a Jodo Shinshu Honganji-ha branch temple in Yokkaichi, Usa City, Oita Prefecture, and became a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2016.
It stands on the south side of the main hall's forecourt, facing north. The building is single-storey timber with a floor area of 337 square metres, roofed as a tiled hip-and-gable entered from the long side, with a large porch under a swept curved gable in heavier round-and-flat tiling.
An assembly hall of this kind exists for the Hoonko memorial rite. In Yokkaichi the observance is called Otorikoshi and runs from 11 to 16 December each year. Honganji Yokkaichi Betsuin Assembly Hall holds 337 square metres in reserve for those six days.
The Main Hall Layout, Borrowed
The interior arrangement is the interesting part. Four free-standing columns divide the matted floor into three, an arrangement lifted directly from the outer sanctuary of a main hall. The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes it in exactly those terms.
A Buddhist altar sits at the centre of the far end, and the transoms carry carved panels finished in gold leaf. This is a meeting room, and it has been given the rank of a worship hall. Where large numbers of parishioners were going to gather, the temple evidently saw no reason to build down.
Honganji Yokkaichi Betsuin Assembly Hall was listed under the criterion for contribution to the historic landscape. It has the second largest floor area of the eleven registered buildings, after the main hall.
A North-Facing Front
Because Honganji Yokkaichi Betsuin Assembly Hall faces north, its facade takes almost no direct sun at any hour. The curved gable over the porch therefore reads clearly all day, its outline holding in steady shade. There is no good light to wait for, which for once is convenient.
The porch itself deserves attention for its scale. Set against 337 square metres of building, it is conspicuously large. The proportions tell you from outside that this is somewhere many people enter at once.
The relationship with the main hall is worth registering too. Standing in front of the main hall, the worship building ahead and the assembly building to one side fall into the same view.

The interior is a working space for services and meetings and is not permanently open, and it is in use through the Otorikoshi period. Contact the temple in advance if you want to see inside. Photographing the exterior is unrestricted.
