The Room Where the Abbot Received Visitors
Honganji Yokkaichi Betsuin Audience Hall was built in the early Meiji era, between 1868 and 1882, at a Jodo Shinshu Honganji-ha branch temple in Yokkaichi, Usa City, Oita Prefecture, and became a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2016.
It stands north of the main hall. The building is single-storey timber, 205 square metres in area, roofed with round-and-flat tiles in a hip-and-gable form entered from the gable end, and fronted by a large porch under a swept curved gable.
A taimensho is where the head priest met clergy from subordinate temples and lay representatives. Honganji Yokkaichi Betsuin Audience Hall sits north of the main hall, one step off the route ordinary worshippers take, because it was built for people arriving with business rather than for the general visitor.
Rank, Expressed as Floor Height
Inside, a corridor separates the entrance from two adjoining rooms of 18 and 10 mats. The smaller of the two is a raised dais room, its floor set one level higher, and matted corridors run around the outside.
A raised dais converts social rank into height. Who sits where is settled by the building before anyone arrives, and the formality of an audience is written straight into the plan. At Honganji Yokkaichi Betsuin Audience Hall the step in the floor is more informative than the floor area.
The finish matches the function. The coffered ceiling is elaborately worked and the transoms carry fine latticework, the two features the Agency for Cultural Affairs singles out. The listing criterion is contribution to the historic landscape.
Approach the Porch
From outside, the porch is the thing. Against a building of 205 square metres it is disproportionately generous, and it decides the whole frontal impression. The swept outline running down from the crest of the curve looks longer and easier from slightly off axis than square on.
Note also the gable-end entry. The triangular face of the roof presents itself to the front, so Honganji Yokkaichi Betsuin Audience Hall looks nothing like the assembly hall across the compound, which is entered from its long side. Seeing the two in succession raises the question of why one temple varied the approach.
A covered corridor leaves the rear of the building towards the Onari Palace. Walk around to the north and the way the accommodation continues beyond becomes clear.

Honganji Yokkaichi Betsuin Audience Hall stands north of the main hall and its exterior can be viewed from within the precinct, with close approach possible around the porch.
The interior is closed. The matted rooms, the raised dais, the coffered ceiling and the latticed transoms are all invisible from outside; ask at the temple about interior access. Photographing the exterior carries no restriction.
