The Abbot's Private Rooms Behind the Audience Hall
Honganji Yokkaichi Betsuin Onari Palace is the head priest's retiring quarters at a Jodo Shinshu Honganji-ha branch temple in Yokkaichi, Usa City, Oita Prefecture, built in the early Showa era between 1926 and 1945 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2016.
A covered corridor links it to the rear of the audience hall. The building is single-storey timber of 107 square metres, with a tiled hip-and-gable roof and a sheet-metal canopy running around the perimeter.
It is the youngest of the eleven registered buildings here. Roughly 80 years separate the 1859 main hall from Honganji Yokkaichi Betsuin Onari Palace. The compound was assembled first, and somewhere to rest was added last.
Formality in Front, Ease Behind
Inside are two 8-mat rooms side by side, with a 4.5-mat and a 3-mat room north of the corridor. The audience hall out front commands 205 square metres of formality; this building has 107. The difference in character is already in the figures.
The detailing inverts as well. Around the alcove of the southern 8-mat room stands a log post left in the round, and the dividing wall beside the alcove, the upper and lower cabinets and the light window are all handled in the free sukiya manner. This is not the study-style rulebook but a deliberate loosening of it. The man who had finished receiving visitors out front came here to stop performing.
Honganji Yokkaichi Betsuin Onari Palace was listed under the criterion for contribution to the historic landscape, as were ten of the eleven buildings.
What the Outside Tells You
With the interior closed, the exterior is all there is, and it still repays attention. Start with the canopy. The main roof is tiled, but the canopy that wraps the building is sheet metal, so a line where one material gives way to the other runs right around above the walls. The combination is characteristic of the early Showa years.
Then the corridor. A covered walkway crosses from the back of the audience hall to Honganji Yokkaichi Betsuin Onari Palace, making it plain from outside that two separate structures were used as one. The junction reads most clearly from the north side.
The building is small and easily lost behind the audience hall and the priests' quarters. Go looking for it deliberately.
Visiting Honganji Yokkaichi Betsuin Onari Palace
The interior of Honganji Yokkaichi Betsuin Onari Palace is closed. Neither the two 8-mat rooms nor the log post at the alcove can be seen from outside.
The exterior is visible from within the precinct, though it sits behind the audience hall and is awkward to see head on. Moving round to the north as far as the ground allows brings the roof and canopy junction into view. Photographing the exterior is unrestricted.
