An Open-Fronted Hall Facing the Main Hall
Honganji Yokkaichi Betsuin Tea Hall is a rest hall at a Jodo Shinshu Honganji-ha branch temple in Yokkaichi, Usa City, Oita Prefecture, built in the late Taisho era between 1919 and 1926 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2016.
It stands just north of the Main Gate, turned to face the main hall across the forecourt. The building is single-storey timber, 65 square metres, with a tiled hip-and-gable roof entered from the gable end. The front bay carries no doors or screens at all, so visitors step in directly from the approach.
A chasho is where pilgrims sat down and were served tea, which is not the same institution as a tea ceremony room. The open front of Honganji Yokkaichi Betsuin Tea Hall is that purpose translated into plan.
Main Hall Detailing at One Twentieth the Size
Inside there are no partitions. A Buddhist altar occupies the centre of the rear wall, flanked by two storage recesses. Even a building meant for resting has something to face.
The quality of the finish is the surprise. Every transom carries a carved panel finished in gold leaf, and the ceiling is coffered. Techniques belonging to the inner sanctuary of a main hall have been brought into a structure of 65 square metres. The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes Honganji Yokkaichi Betsuin Tea Hall as a building that demonstrates the standard composition of a Shinshu temple compound.

Look Up at the Crests
Each coffer in the ceiling is painted with one of two crests: paulownia, and the hanging wisteria used by the Honganji-ha school. The building states its affiliation on the ceiling. Walk in through the open front, tip your head back, and the grid of coffers with its alternating emblems fills the whole field of view.
The gold leaf on the transom carvings flattens under head-on light. Stand at an angle so the light skates across the surface and the depth of the cutting separates from the shine of the leaf.
Because the front is open, Honganji Yokkaichi Betsuin Tea Hall is the easiest building in the precinct in which to see interior workmanship without arranging anything.
