A Roof That Runs Out of the Frame
Honganji Yokkaichi Betsuin Main Hall is the principal worship hall of a Jodo Shinshu Honganji-ha branch temple in Yokkaichi, Usa City, Oita Prefecture, built in 1859 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2016.
It sits at the centre of the precinct, facing east. The Agency for Cultural Affairs records a frontage of 30 metres along the ridge and a floor area of 1212 square metres, and notes that the building is held to be the largest timber structure in Kyushu. Standing in front of it, the ridge line runs past the edge of your vision in both directions before it ends. That a provincial temple in the last decade of the Edo period could raise a hall on this scale says something about how much of Kyushu was sending parishioners to Yokkaichi.
The date, 1859, puts construction ten years before the shogunate fell. Honganji Yokkaichi Betsuin Main Hall has been in continuous use since, without a major rebuilding.
The One Building Registered for Its Design
Japan's registration system for tangible cultural properties works from three criteria. Ten of the eleven buildings in this precinct were listed under the one for structures that contribute to the historic landscape. Honganji Yokkaichi Betsuin Main Hall is the exception: it was registered under the criterion for work that sets a standard of design, which is a judgement about the architecture itself rather than about its setting.
What earns that judgement is the combination of orthodoxy and size. The plan follows the Shinshu model exactly, with a wide matted outer sanctuary, an inner sanctuary carrying the two pillars that flank the altar platform, and a rear chamber behind it. Honganji Yokkaichi Betsuin Main Hall simply executes that plan at 30 metres across, a scale usually reserved for head temples.
Bare Timber, Then Gold
Inside, the outer sanctuary reads first as sheer floor area, matted end to end, with a frame of unusually thick posts and beams overhead. Nothing has been slimmed down for elegance. The members are sized to carry the roof honestly, and that heaviness becomes the character of the room.
Step towards the inner sanctuary and the register changes completely. Carving, gold leaf and pigment cover the surfaces, and in the low light the gold is the only thing giving light back. The altar platform stands between the two pillars, with the rear chamber behind. This drop from plain timber to dense gold, over the space of a few metres, is what visitors to Honganji Yokkaichi Betsuin Main Hall come away remembering.
The carving reads better from the back of the outer sanctuary than from close up. Gold leaf flattens under head-on light, so stand slightly off axis and the depth of the relief comes back.
Seeing Honganji Yokkaichi Betsuin Main Hall
The hall stands on the axis of the precinct and its exterior can be seen freely from directly in front, past the Main Gate. To fit the whole building into a single photograph you need to keep walking east rather than stopping just inside the gate: 30 metres of frontage takes some distance.
The interior is a working space for services and worship, not a permanent exhibit. Visitors who want to go inside Honganji Yokkaichi Betsuin Main Hall, or to photograph it, should contact the temple beforehand. Access to the outer sanctuary is often possible when coming to worship.
Opening hours, admission and directions for the precinct as a whole are set out on the Honganji Yokkaichi Betsuin page.
