A Four-Legged Gate With Its Ornament in the Eaves
Honganji Yokkaichi Betsuin Main Gate is the front gate of a Jodo Shinshu Honganji-ha branch temple in Yokkaichi, Usa City, Oita Prefecture, built in the middle of the Edo period between 1661 and 1751 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2016.
It faces east at the head of the precinct and is a shikyakumon, a gate with two round main posts braced by four square subsidiary posts. The frontage measures 4.8 metres. Horizontal ties and a bearing plate lock the posts together, bracket complexes carry the eaves, the roof is a tiled hip-and-gable, and the ceiling inside the gate is coffered.
Honganji Yokkaichi Betsuin Main Gate is the oldest of the eleven registered buildings here, predating the 1859 main hall by more than a century. The temple rebuilt its hall and kept its gate.
Why the Carving Is All Overhead
The first thing you notice is how unevenly the ornament is distributed. Posts and doors are plain. The eaves zone is not. Carved nosings finish the tie beams and the bracket arms, a repeating ground pattern is cut into the tie beam itself, and the curved beam beneath carries a scrolled motif with young-leaf foliation.
Every one of those elements sits above eye level, at a height where the composition only resolves when you tilt your head back. Honganji Yokkaichi Betsuin Main Gate was designed to be walked under and looked up at, and the carver placed the work accordingly.
The gate was listed under the criterion for structures that contribute to the historic landscape, the same criterion applied to ten of the eleven buildings in the compound.
Where to Stand
For the carving, walk right in under the gate and look up. From out in the approach you get outlines and nothing more. For the shape of the building as a whole, retreat east towards the Second Gate, far enough for the sweep of the roof and the depth of the eaves overhang to read as one figure.
The four-legged arrangement is easiest to understand from the side. Step off the axis of the approach and the rhythm of round post, square post, round post becomes obvious at Honganji Yokkaichi Betsuin Main Gate.
Beyond the gate a bell tower and a drum tower stand to right and left. Standing underneath, all three come into a single field of view, which is how the temple frontage was meant to be read.

The gate is the way into the precinct, so passing through and looking at Honganji Yokkaichi Betsuin Main Gate need no arrangement. The doors are rarely closed during opening hours.
As an outdoor structure it carries no photography restriction. The passage under the gate is a thoroughfare for worshippers, though, so wait for a gap before setting up a tripod. Overcast light or the early and late hours bring out the relief better than midday sun.
