The reason the estate exists
Barely a square metre of floor, this tiny shrine holds the reason the whole estate exists. It enshrines Kanayago (金屋子), the deity of iron, whom every tatara smelter of Okuizumo revered.
Kanayago-kami is the guardian of ironmaking and metalwork, worshipped wherever tatara furnaces burned. The Itohara built this shrine on their grounds in 1896 (Meiji 29): a single-storey timber structure roofed in metal sheet, its floor area just 0.9 square metres. For a household whose fortune came from smelting iron sand with charcoal, a shrine to the iron deity was not decoration but the spiritual centre of the family trade.
The smallest building, the largest meaning
Registered in February 2004 under the historic-landscape criterion, the shrine is the smallest building in the group and, in meaning, among the largest. It fixes in place the belief that ran beneath the account books: that a successful smelt depended on the favour of Kanayago. Built in 1896, it dates from the last decades of Itohara tatara, before Western steel ended the trade in the late Taishō era and the family turned to forestry.
Finding the shrine
Where the residence displays wealth and the storehouses display capacity, this shrine displays the source of both. It is easy to walk past a structure under a square metre in size; slowing down to find it is a way of reading the estate correctly, from its spiritual root outward. The shrine stands within the grounds and is seen from the visitor route.
