A gate for the highest guest
An onarimon is a gate opened only for the highest guest. At the Itohara house it marked the arrival of the lord of Matsue, and it still stands where his procession once passed, a tiled gate of the late Edo period.
The gate is a timber structure with a tiled roof, its opening about 2.3 metres wide, fitted with short flanking wall-wings (sodebei, 袖塀). The term onari (御成) refers to a formal visit by a person of rank; a gate reserved for such occasions signals that the household received the domain lord. The Itohara served at times as the lord's honjin, and the museum's collection includes onari implements kept for these visits.
A threshold of ceremony
Registered in February 2004 under the criterion for contribution to the historic landscape, the ceremonial gate is read together with the wall, the stone gate pillars and the residence behind it. Its value is partly symbolic: a rural ironmaster family granted samurai rank did not open such a gate lightly. The late-Edo carpentry and the flanking walls fix in built form a relationship between a domain and the house that smelted its iron.
The first view of the estate
Approaching the estate, the ceremonial gate frames the first, most formal view of the residence. Unlike the everyday entrance, it was a threshold of ceremony, and it repays a pause before you pass through toward the museum and garden. The gate stands on the approach to the Itohara Memorial Museum within the estate grounds.
