Eijuji Temple Kuri and Shoin
The Eijuji Temple Kuri and Shoin (永住寺庫裡及び書院) is a building of 1810 at Eijuji, a Soto Zen temple in Urano, Shinshiro City, Aichi Prefecture, and it was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on December 5, 2019, under registration number 23-0538. The Agency for Cultural Affairs records it as a single-storey timber building with a tiled roof and a building area of 702 square metres, the largest of Eijuji's registered buildings.
Why It Was Registered
The Eijuji Temple Kuri and Shoin was registered as a model of design. According to the Agency, the shoin adjoins the main hall to the east and leads via a courtyard and corridors to the kitchen to the south. The kitchen has a cooking range on its southern earth floor and a large boarded area to the northwest, and an earth-floored passage on the west turns at a right angle to reach the entrance south of the shoin.
The shoin has two rooms of 15 mats side by side on the north, the eastern one with an alcove and shelves. The Agency regards it as a large building characteristic of a Soto monastery.
What to Look For
Look at the kitchen's boarded hall. According to Shinshiro City, a central pillar stands between the boarded area and the kitchen earth floor, with great beams crossing above it in a grid to create a vast space.
Between the kitchen and shoin is an open courtyard with verandas on three sides, and from the corridor on the north of the shoin you can look out over the garden beyond (Shinshiro City).
