Eijuji Temple Chinju-den (Guardian Shrine)
The Eijuji Temple Chinju-den (Guardian Shrine) (永住寺鎮守殿) is a building of 1926 at Eijuji, a Soto Zen temple in Urano, Shinshiro City, Aichi Prefecture, and it was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on February 27, 2023, under registration number 23-0585. The Agency for Cultural Affairs records it as a single-storey timber building with a tiled roof and a building area of 57 square metres.
Why It Was Registered
The Eijuji Temple Chinju-den (Guardian Shrine) was registered as contributing to the historic landscape of the country. According to the Agency, it is a small hall at the southwest end of the monastery enshrining Dakiniten, a deity merged with Inari worship. It has a gable-entry hip-and-gable roof, double half-spaced rafters and a front porch.
Inside, a rainbow beam divides the inner and outer sanctuaries, both with coffered ceilings, and a one-bay nagare-style shrine stands on the altar of the innermost sanctuary. The Agency notes that it reflects the area's proximity to Toyokawa Inari and forms part of the historic monastery.
What to Look For
Look at the one-bay nagare-style shrine on the innermost altar: a Shinto-style shrine set within a Buddhist monastery, expressing the cult of Dakiniten merged with Inari.
The guardian shrine stands on the west side of the forecourt, after the monks' hall and meditation hall from the north (Shinshiro City). Built in 1926, it is the newest building in the complex.
