Eijuji Temple Founder's Hall and Memorial Tablet Hall
The Eijuji Temple Founder's Hall and Memorial Tablet Hall (永住寺開山堂及び位牌堂) is a building of 1893 at Eijuji, a Soto Zen temple in Urano, Shinshiro City, Aichi Prefecture, and it was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on December 5, 2019, under registration number 23-0537. The Agency for Cultural Affairs records it as a single-storey timber building with a tiled roof and a building area of 107 square metres.
Why It Was Registered
The Eijuji Temple Founder's Hall and Memorial Tablet Hall was registered as a model of design. According to the Agency, it is a gabled north-south block continuing behind the main hall to the north and housing both the founder's hall and the memorial tablet hall. The founder's hall at the front is 2 ken deep, with a rainbow-beam lintel between round posts at the front and three rainbow beams spanning before the altar.
A cusped opening at the centre of the altar frames a projecting shrine niche. Behind it the memorial tablet hall, 7 ken deep, has tablet shelves on both east and west sides and high windows (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
What to Look For
Look at the altar of the founder's hall. According to Shinshiro City, its floor is raised above the tablet hall, with 9 tatami mats and a coffered ceiling, and above the altar three-span rainbow beams between two round posts carry projecting brackets.
The tablet hall lines both sides with tablet shelves lit by high windows (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Notice how the whole block continues directly behind the main hall's sanctuary.
