Eijuji Temple Sanmon Gate
The Eijuji Temple Sanmon Gate (永住寺山門) is a building of 1794 at Eijuji, a Soto Zen temple in Urano, Shinshiro City, Aichi Prefecture, and it was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on February 27, 2023, under registration number 23-0586. The Agency for Cultural Affairs records it as a timber gate with a tiled roof, 3.5 metres wide.
Why It Was Registered
The Eijuji Temple Sanmon Gate was registered as difficult to reproduce. According to the Agency, it is the front gate opening on the south of the monastery: a four-legged gate with a gabled tiled roof, double closely spaced rafters, round posts on stone bases, and rainbow beams between the rear posts tied to the ridge-bearing main posts.
Its carpenters were of the Tatekawa school of Shinshu; the inserted brackets on the gable ends are distinctive, and the beams are decorated with three-dimensional carving. The Agency describes it as a weighty, splendid gate built entirely of zelkova.
What to Look For
Look for the Tatekawa-school carving: the three-dimensional decoration around the beams and the inserted brackets on the gable ends lend splendour to this all-zelkova gate (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
The gate stands at the south end of the monastery's central axis; passing through it, the main hall appears at the back of the broad forecourt (Shinshiro City).
