Eijuji Temple Shuryo (Monks' Hall)

The Eijuji Temple Shuryo (Monks' Hall) (永住寺衆寮) is a building of 1722 at Eijuji, a Soto Zen temple in Urano, Shinshiro City, Aichi Prefecture, and it was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on December 5, 2019, under registration number 23-0540. The Agency for Cultural Affairs records it as a single-storey timber building with a tiled roof and a building area of 105 square metres.

Why It Was Registered

The Eijuji Temple Shuryo (Monks' Hall) was registered as contributing to the historic landscape of the country. According to the Agency, it is a gabled north-south block facing east southwest of the main hall, linked to the meditation hall to the south by a lower roof. Inside, an earth-floored passage runs along the east, with six rooms in two rows.

The Agency describes it as a characteristic building of a Zen monastery. The shuryo is where trainee monks read and live, and together with the meditation hall it forms the west side of the complex.

What to Look For

Notice the projecting segai beams under the eaves; like the meditation hall, it was probably thatched at first (Shinshiro City).

According to the city, the northern front room has an alcove and all rooms have batten ceilings. The lower-roofed passage to the meditation hall suggests the two may have been built as a single unit.
