A Gate and Fence Between the Drive and the Garden

The Mogi Honke Residence Garden Gate and Bamboo Fence (茂木本家住宅庭門及び竹木賊張塀, Mogi Honke Jūtaku Niwamon oyobi Taketokusabari-bei) in Noda, Chiba Prefecture, is a garden gate and a bamboo-faced fence that divide the drive on the west side of the main house from the garden, built in 1926 on the estate of the Mogi Shichizaemon soy sauce brewing family and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 15 January 2010.

The fence runs west for 9.3 metres from the south-west corner of the main house, with a garden gate 1.7 metres wide toward its western end. To the north lies the drive from the Main Gate to the carriage porch; to the south, the garden in front of the house.

Horsetail Bamboo and a Polished-Log Gate

Take-tokusa-bari, horsetail bamboo facing, sets thin bamboo canes upright and tight against one another, like the ribbed stems of the horsetail plant, tokusa. Here only the north face, the side that looks onto the drive, is faced this way, with a band of Shikkui plaster above. The garden side is plain boarding.

The fence is capped with tochibuki, a roof of thick overlapping wooden shingles.

The gate is a bracketed gate of peeled and polished logs under a copper roof. The Agency for Cultural Affairs praises the Mogi Honke Residence Garden Gate and Bamboo Fence as an elegant pairing that gives the house a sense of refinement.

Visiting

The gate and fence stand beside the main house, well inside the property. The grounds are closed, and this spot cannot be seen from the road.
