The Mogi Honke Residence Main Gate (茂木本家住宅正門, Mogi Honke Jūtaku Seimon) in Noda, Chiba Prefecture, is the formal entrance to the estate of the Mogi Shichizaemon soy sauce brewing family, built in 1926 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 15 January 2010. It is a timber Yakuimon gate 2.7 metres wide, flanked by short Sodobei wing walls.

It stands toward the west end of the northern boundary, facing the road to the north. Step through and the gatekeeper's lodge is immediately beside you, with the Former Rice Storehouse beyond.

A Single-Bay Yakuimon and a Wicket Door

The roof is a Kirizuma-zukuri gable of Sangawara-buki pantiles. This is a single-bay yakuimon, the type in which a pair of rear posts backs up the main posts; here the rear posts are set wider apart than the main ones.

A cross-beam (kabuki) spans the main posts, with a secondary beam laid on top, and the eaves use a single layer of widely spaced Taruki rafters. Decoration is kept to a minimum.

Of the two wing walls, the eastern one has a Kugurido wicket door, so people could come and go without opening the main leaves. The Agency for Cultural Affairs notes that the Mogi Honke Residence Main Gate, together with the Former Rice Storehouse and other buildings, gives the estate its solid, imposing front.

Visiting

Because the Mogi Honke Residence Main Gate faces the road, you can see it from the street. Noda City's page on the residence shows a photograph of it, and the Noda City Museum's walking map lists the gate as visible from outside. The grounds beyond it are closed.
