Ninety-Six Metres of Timber Fence

The Mogi Honke Residence Board Fence (茂木本家住宅板塀, Mogi Honke Jūtaku Itabei) in Noda, Chiba Prefecture, is a 96-metre timber fence enclosing the north and east sides of the Mogi Shichizaemon soy sauce brewing family's estate, built in 1926 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 15 January 2010.

It begins at the east end of the Former Pickle Storehouse and follows the road around the north and east of the property. It is the longest of the 13 registered structures, and the Agency for Cultural Affairs counts it as a single structure.

The fence was repaired in 2004.

Upright Boards, Persimmon Tannin and a Little Roof

Square posts stand every 1.2 metres, tied at the foot by a sill and higher up by an inner Nageshi tie-beam, and vertical boards are fixed between them.

Along the top, short brackets carry an eave beam, and widely spaced Taruki rafters hold a narrow roof of Sangawara-buki pantiles. The boards are coated with kakishibu, fermented persimmon tannin, which Noda City notes was used here as a wood preservative.

Around the Inari Shrine enclosure, the wall is brick instead. The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes that brick wall as a heavy counterpart to the Mogi Honke Residence Board Fence, and the two materials meet along the edge of the same estate.

Visiting

Because the fence runs along the road, its outer face can be seen from the streets to the north and east. The Noda City Museum's walking map also points out the tannin-coated fence as visible from outside. The grounds behind it are closed.

This fence encloses a family home, so please do not photograph through gaps into the house. Directions are on the Mogi Honke Residence page.
