A Two-Storey Storehouse East of the Main House

The Mogi Honke Residence North Storehouse (茂木本家住宅北蔵, Mogi Honke Jūtaku Kitagura) in Noda, Chiba Prefecture, is a two-storey Dozo-zukuri earthen storehouse built in 1926 on the estate of the Mogi Shichizaemon soy sauce brewing family, and it was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 15 January 2010.

It stands just east of the family wing of the main house, with its ridge running east to west under a Kirizuma-zukuri gabled roof of Sangawara-buki pantiles. It measures 7.7 metres by 6.8 metres, with a building area of 59 square metres.

The South Storehouse next door was built to the same size and pattern. The two stand at right angles and together take up the east side of the property: the North Storehouse runs east to west, its twin north to south, the same building turned through 90 degrees.

Pilasters in White Plaster

The walls are finished in Shikkui lime plaster, with the shapes of posts raised on the surface. In a normal kura the timber frame disappears inside thick clay walls, so no posts show from outside. Here the Mogi Honke Residence North Storehouse makes a point of drawing them back in, scoring the white walls with vertical lines.

The entrance is on the south side, behind a small covered forecourt. Windows open on the south and east, each with a little hood carried on Mochiokuri brackets and closed by a pair of hinged shutters.

Inside the roof, the frame is a truss. It is a traditional earthen storehouse on the outside, held up by a Western way of framing on the inside.

Visiting

The North Storehouse stands inside a private estate, and the grounds are closed. The Agency for Cultural Affairs notes that this storehouse and its twin shape the look of the property's east side, but how much of them shows above the board fence from the road to the east has not been confirmed.
