The Mogi Honke Residence Former Rice Storehouse (茂木本家住宅旧米倉, Mogi Honke Jūtaku Kyū-Komegura) in Noda, Chiba Prefecture, is a two-storey timber storehouse built in 1926 on the estate of the Mogi Shichizaemon soy sauce brewing family, and it was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 15 January 2010. As the name says, it was built to hold rice.

It stands north-west of the Former Brewing Storehouse, ridge running east to west, and measures 11 metres by 5.5 metres, with a building area of 83 square metres.

The Main Gate is on the northern boundary, with the gatekeeper's lodge between the gate and this storehouse. In its description of the gate, the Agency for Cultural Affairs says the gate, together with the Mogi Honke Residence Former Rice Storehouse and its neighbours, gives the estate its solid, imposing front.

An Iron-Lined Double-Height Room

The roof is a Kirizuma-zukuri gable of Sangawara-buki pantiles, with a lean-to on the south side. The walls are rendered in mortar over a dado of Araidashi washed aggregate, the same finish as the Former Pickle Storehouse, so the two read as a matched pair.

Inside are two rooms, east and west. The western half rises the full height of the building with no upper floor and is lined with iron sheet; the eastern half has a second storey.

No source consulted explains why the western room was lined with iron. The result is a single storehouse with a tall open room and a two-level room side by side.

Visiting

The Former Rice Storehouse is inside a private estate, and the grounds are closed. It helps form the front of the estate with the Main Gate, but how much of it can be seen from the road to the north has not been confirmed.
