The Timber Powerhouse of the Gami Plant

The Gami Power Plant Main Building (賀美発電所本館, Gami hatsudensho honkan) is the powerhouse of a hydroelectric station built in 1919 in Kamifukaogi-cho, Hitachiota City, Ibaraki Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on November 8, 2004. It is owned by the Tokyo Electric Generation Company, and the plant is still in operation.

The Agency for Cultural Affairs records it as a single-storey wooden building with a sheet-metal roof and a building area of 189 square metres; its registration number is 08-0140. According to the Agency, it was built on the middle reaches of the Sato River, part of the Kuji River system.

Why It Was Registered

The Gami Power Plant Main Building was registered as a building that contributes to the historic landscape of the country. The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes a single-storey timber building with a gabled roof of batten-seamed sheet metal and clapboard walls; a raised clerestory roof and wide openings in the walls show careful attention to ventilation.

The roof is carried on timber Pratt trusses, and the generator room houses a single set of horizontal-shaft turbine and generator (Agency for Cultural Affairs). The Tokyo Electric Generation Company notes how the wooden powerhouse, the penstock behind it and the tailrace in front sit in harmony with their natural setting.

What to Look For

Outside, look for the clerestory rising above the ridge of the gabled roof and the large windows in the clapboard walls. These are the ventilation features the Agency points out.

Behind the powerhouse a penstock runs down the hillside, and in front the outfall carries the water back to the Sato River (Tokyo Electric Generation Company). Notice how the facilities line up along the path of the water.
