The Gateway to the Intake
The Sanjo City Waterworks Bureau Osaki Water Purification Plant Intake Pump Station Gate (三条市水道局大崎浄水場取水ポンプ場門) is a 1933 concrete gateway at the entrance to the river intake on the east bank of the Igarashi River in Nakashin, Sanjo City, Niigata Prefecture, and it was listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on October 28, 2011. It stands just east of the intake pump house, on the side facing the town.
The gate is a matched pair, 7.9 meters long overall. Main posts 2.1 meters high stand 3.8 meters apart, and each is tied by a short wing wall to a lower post 1.3 meters high set diagonally forward. Every post is capped with a coping stone.
Because the wing walls splay outward, the gateway seems to open its arms to visitors. The original gates themselves are gone.

The Agency for Cultural Affairs singles out the Sanjo City Waterworks Bureau Osaki Water Purification Plant Intake Pump Station Gate for the way it combines with the pump house to form a pleasing historic scene. On its own it is modest; paired with the cottage-like pump house behind it, it completes the picture of a waterworks entrance on the riverbank.
It is all concrete, with no stone facing or carving. Depth comes from the projecting coping stones and the step in height between main and side posts. The main gate of the treatment works, built of granite, is far grander. The difference in rank between the two gates mirrors their different roles in the system.
What to Look For
Compare the two post heights. The main posts, at 2.1 meters, stand 0.8 meters taller than the 1.3-meter side posts, and that step turns the top of each wing wall into a sloping line that gives the gateway its movement.
The city's reference photograph is taken from the east, from the road. That view catches the symmetry of the gate and the gable of the pump house behind it in one frame.
Visiting
The Sanjo City Waterworks Bureau Osaki Water Purification Plant Intake Pump Station Gate stands outside the main plant below the Igarashi River levee. It can be seen head-on from the road side, but the city says nothing about entry beyond the gate or whether it is part of the spring opening. Check with the Osaki plant office (0256-38-3539) before you go.
