The Plant's Formal Front Door
The Sanjo City Waterworks Bureau Osaki Water Purification Plant Gate (三条市水道局大崎浄水場門) is the 1933 main gate of the Osaki waterworks in Nakashin, Sanjo City, Niigata Prefecture, opening in the middle of the site's west side, and it was listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on October 28, 2011. Straight ahead through the gate, the office building faces it squarely.
The main posts, 1.8 meters high and 4.4 meters apart, are built of granite blocks filled with concrete. From each post a wing wall runs out and turns a right angle, punctuated along the way by six subsidiary posts in all. The surfaces are washed-finish mortar, and the whole composition runs 13 meters.
According to the Niigata branch of the Japan Society of Civil Engineers, the gate originally carried wrought-iron leaves painted olive green. They have not survived.
Early Showa Dignity
The Agency for Cultural Affairs calls the Sanjo City Waterworks Bureau Osaki Water Purification Plant Gate imposing and says it conveys the dignity of an early Showa waterworks. The plant was built to commemorate Emperor Showa's enthronement, and a civic front door of this weight suits that occasion.
Folding the wing walls back at right angles makes the gate read as an enclosure with depth rather than a flat screen, and the run of subsidiary posts gives the boundary a steady rhythm. The edge of the property becomes part of the design.
Next to the modest all-concrete gate at the intake station, this one uses stone and runs 13 meters against the intake gate's 7.9 meters. The difference in rank between the two structures is written into their materials.
Reading It Head-On
Look closely at the main posts and you can pick out the granite coursing, with mortar joints between the blocks and washed-finish surfaces laid over parts of them. Following the change of materials reveals how stone and concrete were combined.
Stand in front of the Sanjo City Waterworks Bureau Osaki Water Purification Plant Gate and the shrine-like roof of the office building sits neatly between the main posts. Gate and office share one axis, and this is the spot where the designer's idea of a formal frontage is clearest.

The gate stands on the property line along Route 289 and can be seen from outside at any time. The grounds are normally closed, but in cherry blossom season the city opens them: in 2026, from April 7, visitors entered on foot through the small side gate beside this main gate and signed a register.
