Shop and Home in One

The Sato Family Residence Former Shop and Main House (佐藤家住宅旧店舗兼主屋, Satō-ke Jūtaku Kyū-tenpo-ken-shuoku) is a Machiya townhouse that served as both shopfront and family home, built in 1879 in the old castle town of Taketa, Oita Prefecture, and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 29 November 2006.

The national database places it in the south-east corner of the Sato plot. It measures 9 by 5 ken under a gabled Kirizuma-zukuri roof of Sangawara-buki tiles, and according to the database notes it is mostly single-storey with an upper floor over part of it, the upper front finished in white Shikkui plaster.

Of the three Sato buildings along the street it is the southernmost. The former miso storehouse adjoins it to the north, and the main house follows beyond. The name records that this building once combined trade and living quarters; what the Sato family sold here is not stated in any public source we found.

Why It Was Registered

The Sato Former Shop and Main House was registered under the criterion of contributing to the historic landscape, as number 44-0126.

The national database describes it as a large townhouse whose plastered upper front gives it real presence in the streetscape, and at 9 ken long it is the most substantial presence on this stretch. Taketa City's townscape plan notes that this building and the main house are both Hirairi, with ridges parallel to the street, while the miso storehouse between them is gable-fronted, and that the alternation gives the street its variety.

What to Look At

A shop floor open to the street

The database says the Sato Family Residence Former Shop and Main House originally had a front Doma, an earth-floored shop space opening onto the street, together with a tōri-doma, an earthen passage running from the front of the house to the back. That pairing is typical of merchant townhouses. Behind it lie three tatami rooms, including a formal zashiki. The word "originally" suggests the earthen floors were altered later.

The white upper front

Above the single-storey roof rises the plastered front of the partial upper floor. That pale wall over the tiles is the image you take away from the street.

Where the sources disagree

The structure field of the national database lists the Sato Former Shop and Main House as a two-storey wooden building, tiled, with a building area of 143 square metres, which does not match the mostly single-storey description in the same entry's notes. Taketa City's plan describes this building as two storeys and 5 and a half by 5 and a half ken, the dimensions that the national database gives for the main house. Which description belongs to which building cannot be settled here.

Visiting

The Sato Family Residence Former Shop and Main House is privately owned, and as of October 2026 there was no notice of public access to the interior.

The exterior can be seen from the street on the east side, with the plastered upper front in plain view as you look up. Whether a road also runs along the south side of the plot has not been confirmed. Please do not enter the grounds.
