What the Aritoshi Shrine Dance Hall Is
The Aritoshi Shrine Dance Hall (蟻通神社舞殿) is an early Edo-period building of the mid-1600s standing in front of the worship hall at Aritoshi Shrine in Nagataki, Izumisano City, Osaka Prefecture, listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2015. It measures 5.8 metres square, one bay each way, with no walls on any side, under a hipped-and-gabled copper roof entered at the gable end. The floor area is 33 square metres.
This is the first building visitors meet. Pass through the front gate and it sits squarely on the axis, holding the approach before the eye travels on. The national register describes it as a large dance hall forming the core of the precinct landscape.
Tradition attributes it to Okabe Nobukatsu, first lord of Kishiwada Domain, and says the roof was originally thatched, though sources disagree on the exact year. It was moved to the present site in 1942.
Why It Was Registered

Scale and type carried the case. The plan is as simple as it gets, a single bay open on all four sides, but 5.8 metres to a side is generous for a building of this kind, and few comparable examples survive in the area.
The frame was noted too. Posts and head-ties are stiffened with brackets, and above the crowning tie the three-block bracket sets appear both over the posts and between them, the intermediate sets finished with carved nosings. The floor sits fairly low and a battened ceiling is fitted above. Everything a working stage needs is met within a spare composition.
What to Look For
Because the Aritoshi Shrine Dance Hall is open on every side, the background changes as you move. From the south the front gate and the arched bridge frame themselves between the posts; from the north the long roof of the worship hall fills the gap. It is worth circling the building once to see how different the same structure looks.
Entering at the gable end matters visually. Seen from that end the triangular gable rises in front of you; seen from the side the roof runs flat and horizontal. Stand at forty-five degrees and the two readings briefly overlap.
The low floor is a working decision rather than an aesthetic one. It matches the eye level of a seated audience, which tells at night when Noh is performed here. The floorboards were replaced in 2024 through a crowdfunding campaign.
Visiting the Aritoshi Shrine Dance Hall
The Aritoshi Shrine Dance Hall has no walls, but the floor is off limits. Shoes are not allowed on the new boards, so ordinary visits mean looking from the surrounding ground.
Once a year the hall becomes a Noh stage for the Aritohoshi Takigi Noh, a torchlit performance begun in 2014 with a Kanze school actor leading a programme of Noh and kyogen. The date moves from year to year, so check the shrine's site before travelling for it.
