What the Aritoshi Shrine Open Corridor Is
The Aritoshi Shrine Open Corridor (蟻通神社透廊) is a covered walkway of 1942 linking the offering hall to the main hall at Aritoshi Shrine in Nagataki, Izumisano City, Osaka Prefecture, listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2015. It is timber-framed and single storey, roofed in copper plate, covering 49 square metres, and runs eleven bays along the top of a stone retaining wall.
The central bay is set wider than the rest, and from it a place of worship projects toward the main hall behind. Rooms close off the east and west ends; everything between is left open on both sides, with no walls. The roof is a simple gable.
Unlike most of the buildings here, the Aritoshi Shrine Open Corridor was not carried over from the old precincts. It was built new for the relocated compound, and together with the rear gate and its fences it belongs to the small group of structures that the move itself produced.
Why It Was Registered
The Aritoshi Shrine Open Corridor was listed under the criterion of contributing to the historic landscape of the nation, with registration number 27-0621.
The national register calls it a structure that shows how the precincts changed when the shrine was relocated. Moving Edo-period halls onto a new site does not by itself resolve the differences in ground level or the route up to the main hall. This corridor was designed to close that gap, which makes it the point where a wartime displacement took architectural form.
The detailing is deliberately quiet. Square posts carry a bearing block and a short bracket arm, and a frog-leg strut sits on the beam above; beyond that there is almost no carving. Rather than compete with the older halls, the corridor was designed to connect them, and that restraint is part of what was recognised.
What to Look For
Walk along the Aritoshi Shrine Open Corridor from the side of the worship hall and the eleven bays of posts step away at even intervals along the stone wall. Because nothing fills the space between the posts, you see straight through to the air on the far side. In rain, light moves along that gap like water.
The wider central bay and the projecting worship space are easy to find once you start counting posts; the rhythm changes at exactly that point.
The strut above the beam only reads from directly beneath. The stone wall lifts the floor high enough that the carving disappears from a distance, so step close and look up.
Visiting the Aritoshi Shrine Open Corridor
The Aritoshi Shrine Open Corridor is open-sided, but visitors may not step onto it. Viewing means looking up from the level of the approach path, below the stone wall.
You can follow the line of posts from either side. The west flank sits near the path in from the back gate; the east flank runs beside the openwork fence. The perspective works best from either end, with your eye sent straight down the axis.
