The Aritoshi Shrine South Purification Pavilion (蟻通神社南手水舎) is a purification shelter rebuilt in 1940 beside the approach path at Aritoshi Shrine in Nagataki, Izumisano City, Osaka Prefecture, listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2015. It is timber-framed with a tiled roof and an area of 7.4 square metres, and the water basin is part of the listing. The plan is two bays long, open on all sides, under a gabled roof of heavy formal tiles.
It runs north to south, with the basin at the north end and a well to the south. The basin is the thing to see here: a large stone vessel bearing an inscription of 1694. A basin more than two centuries older than the shelter sits beneath it.
The building went up in 1940 and was moved to the present site two years later, in 1942, having barely settled before it was shifted.

The frame is plainly handled. Posts lean slightly inward and are tied with through-rails; bearing blocks and short arms over the posts carry the purlin and beam. There is none of the pierced carving found on the northern pavilion. Built in the Showa era yet using inherited timber technique unchanged, the Aritoshi Shrine South Purification Pavilion has documentary value for exactly that reason.
What to Look For
Start by finding the 1694 inscription. It is cut into the side of the basin and reads most easily from an angle that avoids reflection off the water. A stone vessel over three centuries old is still in daily use here.
The size of the basin is worth noticing on its own. It is large for a shelter only two bays long, and the mismatch follows from the sequence: the basin existed first and the building was fitted around it.
Set against the northern pavilion, the difference in intent is unmistakable. The Aritoshi Shrine South Purification Pavilion carries no ornament and stands on structural line alone. Having two buildings of the same function in one precinct lets a visitor compare late Edo and early Showa handling directly.

The Aritoshi Shrine South Purification Pavilion is in active use for the rinsing of hands and mouth, and visitors may use it normally. Being open on all sides, the basin and the frame can be examined at close range. Others may be waiting, so do not linger over photographs.
It stands beside the path just short of the front gate, after you enter from the southern approach, so you reach it before crossing the arched bridge. For the gable end, step off the path to one of the flanks.
