What the Aritoshi Shrine Front Gate Is
The Aritoshi Shrine Front Gate (蟻通神社表門) is a gate of 1852 facing south at the entrance to Aritoshi Shrine in Nagataki, Izumisano City, Osaka Prefecture, listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2015. Painted vermilion, it is a four-legged gate with a gabled roof of heavy formal tiles and an opening of 4.0 metres. A ridge tablet fixes the date of construction.
Few shrines use a gate of this type at the main entrance. The four-legged form belongs by tradition to temples and to houses of rank, and the Aritoshi Shrine Front Gate is an uncommon case of it serving as the front of a shrine. Short wings flank it on either side, giving the entrance a formal frontage.
Like the halls behind it, the gate was carried from the old precincts to the present site in 1942.
Why It Was Registered
The Aritoshi Shrine Front Gate was listed under the criterion of contributing to the historic landscape of the nation, with registration number 27-0625.
What the register singles out is the concentration of ornament. Round posts are tied crosswise only, and the front and rear posts carry the purlin on bearing blocks with boat-shaped arms. Over the ridge posts a rectangular beam the depth of the purlin rests on shaped brackets, with a further beam spanning between the post heads. Cloud-patterned wing ornaments are set at the post heads and matching nosings above the bearing blocks. A great deal of joinery is packed into a small building.
The vermilion finish counts too. Leaving the timber bare was the ordinary choice; painting it made the end of the approach into a visual focus. Standing where every visitor must pass, the Aritoshi Shrine Front Gate has long served as the threshold of the precinct view.
What to Look For
Cross the arched bridge, stand square on, and the dance hall appears framed in the opening beyond. The 4.0 metre span decides exactly how much of that hall you see. This layering is the clearest thing to look for at the Aritoshi Shrine Front Gate.
The cloud-pattern ornaments at the post heads are too steeply overhead to read from directly below. Step back a few paces and the outline resolves. The back gate lacks these ornaments entirely, so see both and the difference becomes obvious.
The paint has weathered unevenly. Surfaces exposed to rain and those sheltered under the eaves have aged differently, and up close, along the edges where paint meets bare timber, the layers of repainting are sometimes visible.
Visiting the Aritoshi Shrine Front Gate
The Aritoshi Shrine Front Gate stands on the normal route into the precincts and visitors pass through it. Nothing is roped off, though studying the structure overhead means stopping underneath and looking up. Others will be coming through, so step aside if you linger.
For the whole front, retreat to the south side of the arched bridge. To take the bridge and the gate together, line up along the stone lanterns of the southern approach. The rear face is seen from inside the grounds, with the dance hall behind you.
