What the Aritoshi Shrine North Purification Pavilion Is
The Aritoshi Shrine North Purification Pavilion (蟻通神社北手水舎) is a late Edo-period structure of the 1800s standing north of the back gate at Aritoshi Shrine in Nagataki, Izumisano City, Osaka Prefecture, listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2015. It is timber-framed with a tiled roof and an area of 6.5 square metres, and the water basin beneath it is included in the listing. Aligned north to south, it holds the basin toward the south end and a well at the north.
There are two such pavilions in the precincts. One stands beside the southern approach; this is the northern one. They differ in date and in intention, and the northern pavilion is by far the more heavily carved.
It came to the present site with the other buildings in 1942.
Why It Was Registered
The Aritoshi Shrine North Purification Pavilion was listed under the criterion of contributing to the historic landscape of the nation, with registration number 27-0628.
The national register calls it a richly ornamented purification pavilion. Structures of this kind are usually built plainly, as ancillary shelters, so one carrying this much carving stands out.
The frame uses square posts set with a slight inward lean, tied by a head beam and a crowning tie. At each gable end a bottle-shaped strut with wing ornaments rises above a decoratively profiled beam. The brackets supporting the head beam are unusually large, and both they and the beam ends are worked in pierced carving. That technique matches the votive tablet hall, which suggests the two buildings come from the same workshop tradition.
What to Look For
Go round to a gable end first. The bottle-shaped strut with its wing ornaments, standing on the profiled beam, cannot be seen from the front at all. The whole arrangement is fitted inside the triangle of the gable.
The pierced brackets and beam ends are the best thing here. Light passes through the cut-away sections, so a partly backlit position reads the pattern better than direct sun. Compare them with the carving on the votive tablet hall and the similarity in habit becomes clear.
The posts lean slightly inward rather than standing plumb. The angle is hard to catch on its own; line a post up against a vertical edge behind it and the lean appears. It is a device for making a small building sit steadily.
Visiting the Aritoshi Shrine North Purification Pavilion
The Aritoshi Shrine North Purification Pavilion is open-sided and worshippers approach it in the normal way to rinse hands and mouth. Since it is in active use, avoid occupying it for long while photographing.
Pass through the back gate heading north and it is immediately on the left. To take it together with the gate, stand on the north side of the approach looking south. For the gable ornament, move round to either flank.
