What the Aritoshi Shrine Drum Bridge Is
The Aritoshi Shrine Drum Bridge (蟻通神社太鼓橋) is a late Edo-period stone bridge of the 1800s crossing the pond in front of the main gate at Aritoshi Shrine in Nagataki, Izumisano City, Osaka Prefecture, listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2015. It is a stone girder bridge 3.9 metres long and 2.6 metres wide, with short railings at either end. Of the eleven registered properties here, it is the only one that is not a building.
The structure is a girder bridge, but an arched girder springing from the central pier gives it the humped profile of a drum bridge. A true arch is built up from wedged stones; here the curve is carried by the shape of the girder itself.
Arched stone railings run along both sides of the deck, and the small blocks within them are cut to a weight-shaped profile. Like the halls, the bridge was moved to its present position in 1942.
Why It Was Registered
The Aritoshi Shrine Drum Bridge was listed under the criterion of contributing to the historic landscape of the nation, with registration number 27-0629, last of the eleven consecutive entries.
The national register puts it briefly: a stone bridge that lends character to the approach. What is valued is not engineering but position. A visitor coming up the southern path crosses the bridge first and passes through the gate second, so entry to the precincts happens in two stages rather than one.
The detailing was not neglected either. Cutting the railing blocks to a weight-shaped profile borrows a motif from timber joinery and renders it in stone. A late Edo mason's habit of quoting woodwork is compressed into a span of 3.9 metres.
What to Look For
The hump reads better from the side than from the deck. Stand at the edge of the pond and the girder curves away from the central pier in both directions, doubled by its reflection. On a clear day the water repeats the whole profile.
Look closely at the blocks in the railing. The weight shape is broad at top and bottom and pinched in the middle, and it is the only curve in an otherwise straight-edged bridge. Walking along and counting them brings out the rhythm of the repeat.
Standing on the Aritoshi Shrine Drum Bridge and looking ahead, the dance hall appears layered behind the opening of the gate. The bridge exists in part to give visitors that view.
Visiting the Aritoshi Shrine Drum Bridge
Visitors cross the Aritoshi Shrine Drum Bridge on the ordinary route in from the southern approach. The stone is humped and can be slippery in wet weather, so watch your footing. At 2.6 metres the deck is not wide, and passing others calls for a little care.
To see the profile from the side, walk round to the eastern or western edge of the pond. The relationship between the underside of the span and the water reads best from a low position.
Photography is unrestricted and entry is free. Directions for reaching the shrine are given on the Aritoshi Shrine page.
