What Is the Yoshida Family Residence East Row House?

The Yoshida Family Residence East Row House (吉田家住宅東長屋, Yoshida-ke Jūtaku Higashi-nagaya) is a two-story Taishō-era (1912 to 1925) timber row house of four dwellings in Toyosaki, Kita-ku, Osaka City, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2008. It stands east of the main house of the Yoshida estate, across a lane.

The ridge runs north to south under a pantiled gable roof. All four dwellings share the same plan, with a kitchen and a four-and-a-half-mat room downstairs and two rooms upstairs. At 141 m² it is the largest of the eight registered buildings.

Why the Yoshida Family Residence East Row House Was Registered

The Yoshida Family Residence East Row House was registered for its contribution to the historic townscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs values it as a reminder of row houses lining a lane.

With two rooms upstairs, each dwelling is a size up from the West Row House, which has a single six-mat room above. Within the same estate, the size of the homes differs from one row house to the next.

What to Look For at the Yoshida Family Residence East Row House

Along its west face, toward the lane, the Yoshida Family Residence East Row House is screened by a high wall with a gate toward the north end. The wall matches the gate and wall of the main house, so from the lane it reads less like a row of rentals than like the front of a single residence.

The Osaka City Housing Information Center notes that from the late Meiji period, new districts of Osaka saw row houses set back from the road behind a gate and high wall, with a small front garden. The wall and gate of the East Row House belong to the same family of modern Osaka designs.

Visiting the Yoshida Family Residence East Row House

The Yoshida Family Residence East Row House is lived in and the interior is not open. Its wall and gate face the lane between it and the main house.

Behind the wall are the front gardens of the individual homes. Please do not peer through the gate; the tiles and finish of the wall can be appreciated from the lane.
