What Is the Yoshida Family Residence North Row House?
The Yoshida Family Residence North Row House (吉田家住宅北長屋, Yoshida-ke Jūtaku Kita-nagaya) is a two-story timber row house built in 1915 in Toyosaki, Kita-ku, Osaka City, and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2008. Of the Yoshida buildings known as Toyosaki Nagaya, it is the one to the north of the main house, facing the public street.
Its gabled roof is laid with pantiles, and the building bends into an L shape in plan, with a building area of 110 m². It is divided into three dwellings. The two on the west share the same plan, with the entrance at the northwest; upstairs each has two rooms of six and four tatami mats, the larger with a small alcove called a toko.
Why the Yoshida Family Residence North Row House Was Registered
The Yoshida Family Residence North Row House was registered for its contribution to the historic townscape. It is also the only one of the eight Yoshida buildings with an exact construction year, 1915; the rest are dated only to the Taishō era.
Because it faces the street, this row house is the public front of the whole estate. Unlike the row houses tucked along the inner lanes, it shapes what passers-by see of Toyosaki Nagaya.
What to Look For at the Yoshida Family Residence North Row House
Look for the window in the middle of the north face of the Yoshida Family Residence North Row House. It keeps its wooden railing and small canopy, which the Agency for Cultural Affairs singles out as surviving from the time the house was built.
The building bends into an L and holds three homes. Even in these two-room dwellings, the upstairs six-mat room was given a toko alcove, a small sign of a proper sitting room.
Visiting the Yoshida Family Residence North Row House
The Yoshida Family Residence North Row House is lived in and the interior is not open. Its north face, however, looks onto the street outside the plot, which makes it the easiest of the eight buildings to see.
From the street on the north side you can make out the railing and canopy of the central window. People live here, so admire it quietly from the road and avoid pointing a camera at windows and doors.
