Why the Yoshida Family Residence South Two-Unit Row House Was Registered

The Yoshida Family Residence South Two-Unit Row House was registered for its contribution to the historic townscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs singles out the scratch tiles on the west wall, believed to be original.

Scratch tiles, facing tiles with a combed surface, were widely used from the end of the Taishō era into the early Shōwa era. On a timber two-dwelling row house in an otherwise traditional estate, they stand out.

What to Look For at the Yoshida Family Residence South Two-Unit Row House

On the west face of the Yoshida Family Residence South Two-Unit Row House, the upper wall is set back about 90 cm, half a ken, from the wall below. The step gives the front a stepped profile, with the upper wall held back.

The roof and the canopy are not straight but swell gently upward in a curve called mukuri. Among row houses with plain straight gables, that soft roofline and the combed tile wall give this building its character.
