What Is the Yoshida Family Residence West Row House?
The Yoshida Family Residence West Row House (吉田家住宅西長屋, Yoshida-ke Jūtaku Nishi-nagaya) is a two-story Taishō-era (1912 to 1925) timber row house of four dwellings in Toyosaki, Kita-ku, Osaka City, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2008. Despite its name, it stands south of the main house of the Yoshida estate, across a lane, at lot 1-48.
The ridge runs north to south. The pantiled roof ends in a hip-and-gable irimoya form at the north and a plain gable at the south. The four dwellings share an identical plan: an entrance toward the south of the east face, a kitchen at the back of the ground floor, and one six-mat room upstairs. The building covers 79 m² and includes a wall.
Why the Yoshida Family Residence West Row House Was Registered
The Yoshida Family Residence West Row House was registered for its contribution to the historic townscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs points to the continuous canopy along the full length of the east face as a feature that survives from the original design.
Each dwelling has an entrance and kitchen downstairs and a single room above, and all four keep that same arrangement. The row house has not been broken up by piecemeal alterations and still looks much as it did when it was built.
What to Look For at the Yoshida Family Residence West Row House
One end of the roof of the Yoshida Family Residence West Row House is irimoya and the other a plain gable. The main house uses the same pairing, on a ridge running east to west; here it is repeated on a ridge turned north to south.
Along the east face, a single canopy runs over all four front doors from end to end. Because it is not broken at each dwelling, the row house presents one long, unified front to the lane.
Visiting the Yoshida Family Residence West Row House
The Yoshida Family Residence West Row House is lived in and the interior is not open. Its east face, with the doors and the long canopy, looks onto a lane.
Residents use the lane every day. If you look at the building, do not linger at doorsteps and keep the way clear.
