What Is the Yoshida Family Residence Main House?
The Yoshida Family Residence Main House (吉田家住宅主屋, Yoshida-ke Jūtaku Shuoku) is a two-story urban house of the Taishō era (1912 to 1925) in Toyosaki, Kita-ku, Osaka City, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2008. It is the family home at the center of the eight registered buildings known together as Toyosaki Nagaya.
The timber house covers 116 m². Its roof runs east to west and is laid with interlocking pantiles, and its two ends are finished differently: a hip-and-gable irimoya end to the east and a plain gabled end to the west. Row houses close in around the Main House on the north, east and south, and a small storehouse is attached at its northwest corner.
Inside, the house divides along the same line. The eastern half was originally a tōri-niwa, an earth-floored passage running from front to back, while the western half holds four living rooms arranged in a square, the plan known as Yomadori. A formal entrance with a raised Shikidai step faces the front, and the main tatami room has a full set of Zashiki-kazari, the alcove and shelves of a reception room.
Why the Yoshida Family Residence Main House Was Registered
Of the eight buildings, the Yoshida Family Residence Main House is the only one registered as a model of its type. The others were listed for their contribution to the historic townscape; the Main House was judged worth keeping for its form alone. The Agency for Cultural Affairs notes how fully it retains the shape of an urban house of the Taishō period.
Two kinds of house share one roof here. The earthen passage belongs to the working townhouse, built for carrying goods and water through to the back; the shikidai entrance and the dressed reception room belong to a household that received guests with some ceremony.
What to Look For at the Yoshida Family Residence Main House
Start with the roof. At the east end of the Yoshida Family Residence Main House, the roof sweeps down on all sides beneath a small gable, the irimoya form; at the west end it simply stops at a flat gable wall. Finishing the two ends of a single ridge in different ways is the most distinctive thing about the exterior.
Then note how the entrance lines up with the wall in front. Opposite the door of the Main House, the high wall enclosing the front garden steps back and opens a wicket door under a small tiled canopy, so that wall and entrance read as one design.
Visiting the Yoshida Family Residence Main House
The Yoshida Family Residence Main House is a private home and is not normally open. It also sits behind the wall that encloses its front garden, so only glimpses of it can be had from outside.
The interior has opened during Open Nagaya Osaka, the weekend when row houses across the city welcome visitors. In 2023 the Main House headed the list of participating houses. Whether it opens, and whether photographs are allowed, changes from year to year, so check that year's program.
