What Is the Yoshida Family Residence North Two-Unit Row House?
The Yoshida Family Residence North Two-Unit Row House (吉田家住宅北二軒長屋, Yoshida-ke Jūtaku Kita-niken-nagaya) is a two-story Taishō-era (1912 to 1925) timber row house of two dwellings in Toyosaki, Kita-ku, Osaka City, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2008. It stands on the east side of the Yoshida estate, between the East Row House and the South Two-Unit Row House, at lot 1-50.
It has a pantiled gable roof and is divided into two dwellings, north and south. With a building area of 61 m² and a wall of its own, it is, with its southern neighbor, one of the two smallest row houses on the estate.
Why the Yoshida Family Residence North Two-Unit Row House Was Registered
The Yoshida Family Residence North Two-Unit Row House was registered for its contribution to the historic townscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs notes that, together with the main house, it preserves the character of the lane as it once was.
What earned the registration is less the building itself than the part it plays in the scene. A small two-dwelling row house, fronted by a high wall and gate, becomes part of an estate frontage that continues from the main house.
What to Look For at the Yoshida Family Residence North Two-Unit Row House
Like the East Row House to its north, the Yoshida Family Residence North Two-Unit Row House is fronted by a high wall in the same design as that of the main house, with a gate toward the north end. Because the wall carries on from one building to the next, one side of the lane is lined by a single run of matching wall.
Professor Shihoko Koike of Osaka Metropolitan University points to the unpaved earthen lanes that survive at Toyosaki Nagaya. Matching walls along an earthen lane come close to what the agency means by the feel of the lane as it once was.
Visiting the Yoshida Family Residence North Two-Unit Row House
The Yoshida Family Residence North Two-Unit Row House is lived in and the interior is not open. Its wall and gate stand on the lane side.
Behind the wall are the residents' front gardens. Look at how the wall runs along the lane, and do not step inside the gate.
