An entrance built for the imperial envoy alone
Omi Shrine Imperial Envoy Entrance (近江神宮勅使玄関, Ōmi Jingū Chokushi Genkan), the porch reserved for the imperial envoy at Omi Shrine in Jingu-cho, Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture, was built in 1940 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 1998.
It sits between the eastern shrine office block and the Saikan: copper roof, 22 square metres. The Saikan doubles as a building for distinguished guests, and this porch is where that route begins.
An imperial envoy is a messenger of the emperor. The enshrinement rite at Omi Shrine was held on 7 November 1940 with an envoy in attendance, and this entrance dates from the same year.
Making a presence out of 22 square metres
Its number as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property is 25-0085, registered on 9 October 1998. A curved gable rises at the centre of the eastern face of Omi Shrine Imperial Envoy Entrance, and the Agency for Cultural Affairs calls it light on its feet.
The bracketing is a boat-shaped arm. Rather than piling on ornament, the design gets its standing from plain brackets and a single gable, which the same account describes as a composition of real dignity. Twenty-two square metres is enough to carry a formal entrance.
The interior is worked out just as concretely. A single bay of width is divided down the middle into a Doma earth floor and a corridor, with a shelf built at the far end of the porch. The side where shoes come off sits beside the side you walk on, and the shelf closes the view ahead. It is a tight frontage divided without waste.
Comparing it with the gable on the Kagura Hall
Omi Shrine Imperial Envoy Entrance serves envoys and guests, not worshippers, and there is normally no occasion to go inside.
