A boundary of seven square metres
Omi Shrine Middle Gate (近江神宮中門, Ōmi Jingū Chūmon), the gate to the innermost enclosure at Omi Shrine in Jingu-cho, Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture, was built in 1940 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 1998.
It is Kirizuma-zukuri under Hiwadabuki cypress bark, one bay each way, with a floor area of 7 square metres. It stands at the top of the roofed stairway corridor, and its plank doors form the entrance to the innermost enclosure.
Seven square metres makes it the smallest of the 40 registered properties at Omi Shrine. A gate the size of a small room controls the way into the deepest part of the precinct.
Different detailing on each face
Its number as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property is 25-0057, registered on 9 October 1998. Omi Shrine Middle Gate shares a ridge with the connecting corridor, so at roof level the two run together.
The point of interest sits above the plank doors. On the corridor side there is a Kaerumata strut with bearing blocks and a boat-shaped arm; on the stairway side, a simple scissors-truss gable frame. The same doorway is framed two different ways depending on which direction you face.
The ornamented strut faces the innermost enclosure, the plainer truss faces the approach. Passing through the gate swaps one set of details for another. The Agency for Cultural Affairs notes that, like the rear gate, this gate is an important element marking the boundary of the innermost enclosure.
Only the roof shows from outside
No visitor can approach Omi Shrine Middle Gate. What lies inside it is the sanctuary compound, and worship ends at the Outer Worship Hall.
Looking up towards the sanctuary from the end of the Outer Worship Hall, cypress bark roofs stack in steps. The roof of Omi Shrine Middle Gate meets the upper end of the stairway corridor roof, and because it shares a ridge with the connecting corridor the two read as one continuous line.
The plank doors themselves stay out of sight. What is legible is the height at which they sit. The point where the stairway corridor finishes climbing is the threshold of the gate, so following the overlap of the roofs tells you where the highest doorway in the precinct's section lies. Photography in the grounds is unrestricted.
