Eight bays closing the south side
Omi Shrine Inner Precinct Corridor, South (近江神宮内院廻廊（南部）, Ōmi Jingū Naiin Kairō Nanbu), the southern arm of the cloister round the inner enclosure at Omi Shrine in Jingu-cho, Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture, was built in 1940 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 1998.
It covers 129 square metres under a copper roof. In structure, scale and form it matches the northern arm: a single-aisle corridor with Renji-mado lattice outside and an open inner face.
It is under this southern entry that the Agency for Cultural Affairs sets out how the inner enclosure as a whole is bounded.
Six members making one enclosure
Its number as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property is 25-0067, registered on 9 October 1998. According to that description, the inner enclosure is closed by the Inner Worship Hall with its flanking corridors of four bays each, the Outer Worship Hall with corridors of the same form and length, and the eight-bay corridors joining them along the north and south. Omi Shrine Inner Precinct Corridor, South is the eight-bay run on the south.
Two halls face each other, one at the west and one at the east, with eight bays of corridor bridging them on either side. The members that make the enclosure are split across several registrations, but as a space it is one room. Note that the separately registered wing corridors belong to the Middle Gate further up, which is easy to confuse.
North and south run to the same eight bays, and both are recorded at 129 square metres. The enclosure is symmetrical, and only the northern arm absorbs a change of level inside itself.
The south side takes the light differently
Omi Shrine Inner Precinct Corridor, South encloses the inner courtyard and is not open to visitors. Worship takes place at the Outer Worship Hall.
Standing at the southern end of that hall, you see this corridor running away sideways to close the courtyard. It faces its northern counterpart, two parallel runs of lattice across the space.
Because the wall plane faces south, the lattice bars throw a fine set of shadows on a clear afternoon. The northern arm rarely does this, so two corridors of identical form end up looking quite different. If you can choose your hour, the afternoon makes Omi Shrine Inner Precinct Corridor, South the easier of the two to read. Photography in the grounds is unrestricted.
