The one building set at an angle
Omi Shrine Saikan (近江神宮斎館, Ōmi Jingū Saikan), the purification and reception building at Omi Shrine in Jingu-cho, Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture, was built in 1940 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 1998.
It adjoins the imperial envoy's entrance on the north, Irimoya-zukuri under copper sheet, 98 square metres. According to the Agency for Cultural Affairs, this is the only building in the precinct whose axis is turned, by some 30 degrees.
A saikan is where priests withdraw to purify themselves before rites. At Omi Shrine it also serves as a building for receiving distinguished guests.
Eight mats and ten, with different ceilings
Its number as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property is 25-0086, registered on 9 October 1998. Inside, Omi Shrine Saikan holds two rooms, one of eight mats and one of ten with an alcove, with matted verandas running along the south and east faces and a Kōran balustrade on the east.
The two rooms are graded by their ceilings. The eight-mat room has a Saobuchi-tenjō, the ten-mat shoin room a Gō-tenjō. Thin battens laid across for the first, a full coffered grid for the second: two levels of formality inside one building. The Agency for Cultural Affairs credits the arrangement with producing a settled interior.
The turned axis makes more sense from inside. Every other building follows the line of the approach; this one alone sits at an angle, so the balustraded veranda on its east face looks out in a direction the others do not. The turn reads as an adjustment to the slope and the outlook.
Approaching from the side path
Omi Shrine Saikan is not a building for receiving worshippers. Its rooms exist for seclusion before rites and for hospitality, and it is not open to casual visits.
To place it, approach from the side where the Side Torii Gate stands. That torii marks the head of the path serving the Saikan, and a walk from the main approach to the sanctuary never passes it. Check the side path on the precinct map first.
What shows from outside is the orientation. Compare the ridge lines of the surrounding buildings and Omi Shrine Saikan alone is turned. Thirty degrees is enough of an angle to read with the naked eye. For access, ask at the shrine office. Photography in the grounds is unrestricted.
