Raised on a terrace with its own steps
Omi Shrine Inner Worship Hall (近江神宮内拝殿, Ōmi Jingū Naihaiden), the hall used for rites at Omi Shrine in Jingu-cho, Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture, was built in 1940 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 1998.
It stands at the western end of the inner enclosure on a terrace approached by stone steps: five bays by three, Irimoya-zukuri under copper sheet, 100 square metres. Ceremonies and formal prayer services take place here.
At the back, a projecting section three bays by one is raised higher still, and from it the roofed stairway corridor begins. The front faces the inner enclosure, the rear faces the ground above. The building bridges two levels.
A device for narrowing the route
Its number as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property is 25-0065, registered on 9 October 1998. The Agency for Cultural Affairs is explicit about what Omi Shrine Inner Worship Hall does: it draws in the line of approach, which had opened out across the inner enclosure, and points it through the stairway corridor towards the sanctuary.
Past the Outer Worship Hall, the route spreads sideways into the width of the inner enclosure. From there the only way onward is the three-bay-by-one projection at the back of this hall. Five bays of frontage narrow to three, then to the single bay of the corridor. In a composition spread over sloping ground, this is the building that handles the narrowing in plan.
The ceiling is a coved and finely gridded Gō-tenjō, a high-status finish in which the grid is stepped up around its edge. It is among the more laborious pieces of work in the precinct.
Seen head on from the place of prayer
The interior of Omi Shrine Inner Worship Hall is closed to visitors, but seeing the building takes no effort.
The shrine's guide points out that what stands directly ahead of you from the praying position in the Outer Worship Hall is the inner hall where rites and prayer services are held. The spot where you stand to worship is the spot from which you see it square on: the hipped-and-gabled roof, the five bays, the stone steps up to the terrace, all at once.
Walk to the end of the Outer Worship Hall and the crossed finials of the sanctuary appear above and beside the roof of the inner hall. Omi Shrine Inner Worship Hall is not hiding the sanctuary; it is placed so as to block it from the front and reveal it from the side. Photography in the grounds is unrestricted.
