An eight-legged gate at the north entrance
Omi Shrine North Gate (近江神宮北神門, Ōmi Jingū Kita Shinmon), the northern entrance to the outer precinct at Omi Shrine in Jingu-cho, Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture, was built in 1944 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 1998.
It is a timber eight-legged gate, Kirizuma-zukuri under copper sheet, 15 square metres. Three bays wide with all three open, so every bay can be walked through.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes it as the gate answering to the Kagura Hall, marking the entrance to the northern part of the outer precinct. Like that hall, it belongs to the second campaign of 1944.
Round posts and squared posts together
Its number as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property is 25-0074, registered on 9 October 1998. What distinguishes Omi Shrine North Gate is the use of two different post sections.
The main posts are round, the stays squared, and their heads are tied with an Ebi-kōryō, a beam bent like a prawn to connect two points at different heights. The curve of the timber is itself the ornament, arching across from one section to the other.
The brackets differ by post as well. A three-block bracket on each main post carries the exposed ridge beam, while the stays use a large block and arm to support the eaves purlin. Carrying the ridge and carrying the eaves are treated as separate jobs, each with its own fitting. The roof is given a curve. The frame of an eight-legged gate is plain enough, but the choice of members here is anything but rough.
A gate for people arriving from the north
Omi Shrine North Gate stands at the entrance to the northern outer precinct and can be reached from the approach. Within opening hours it is freely seen, and photography is not restricted.
Look at the feet and the heads of the posts in turn. Touch a main post to feel the round section, then look at the squared stay set behind it. Raise your eyes and the bent beam arches between them. Because all three bays are open, whichever one you walk through, the same joint appears on both sides.
Beyond the gate lies the ground where the Kagura Hall and the assembly hall stand. Passing through Omi Shrine North Gate is not part of the vertical climb towards the sanctuary but a move sideways into the working quarter of the precinct. It marks the point where the way you walk the site changes.
