Twenty-seven square metres built as a back door
Omi Shrine Saikan Entrance (近江神宮斎館玄関, Ōmi Jingū Saikan Genkan), the rear entrance to the Saikan at Omi Shrine in Jingu-cho, Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture, was built in 1944 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 1998.
It projects north from the middle of the passage joining the west face of the Saikan to the north end of the western shrine office block: Kirizuma-zukuri, tiled, 27 square metres.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs identifies it as the back entrance of the Saikan. A rear door, in other words, carries a registration of its own.
A back door with a composed elevation
Its number as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property is 25-0087, registered on 9 October 1998. Back entrance or not, the front of Omi Shrine Saikan Entrance is properly composed.
Four tall panelled doors are set into the frontage. A panelled door of this kind, with muntins framed inside stiles and rails, ranks above a plain boarded one. Above the Nageshi tie runs a Ranma transom filled with closely spaced vertical bars, so the vertical lines of the doors are answered by vertical lines above them.
The bracketing is a boat-shaped arm, the gable is framed with a scissors truss, and a plain Gegyo pendant hangs at the barge board. The Agency for Cultural Affairs notes that these elements pull the elevation together. A face that can be seen from outside gets composed even when it counts as the back, which makes sense for a building given over to hospitality.
Counting the doors and the transom bars
Omi Shrine Saikan Entrance belongs to the Saikan and is not a doorway visitors pass through. There is normally no occasion to go inside.
From outside, count the elements of the frontage: four tall panelled doors, and above them a transom of fine vertical bars. The spacing differs between the two, so the density of lines changes from bottom to top. The pendant on the gable is a plain one, made differently from those on the halls higher up the slope.
The tiled roof is another way to pick out Omi Shrine Saikan Entrance. In this part of the precinct the Saikan is roofed in copper while this entrance and the assembly hall are tiled, so materials are mixed. Ask at the shrine office about access. Photography in the grounds is unrestricted.
