Two bays at the end become a room
Omi Shrine Wing Corridor, South (近江神宮翼廊（南部）, Ōmi Jingū Yokurō Nanbu), part of the screen around the innermost enclosure at Omi Shrine in Jingu-cho, Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture, was built in 1940 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 1998.
It is the southern half of the straight wing corridor attached to the Middle Gate: Hiwadabuki cypress bark, 22 square metres, four bays. In structure, scale and form it matches the northern half.
The difference lies at the far end. The two southernmost of its four bays are enclosed, with plank doors on the north and south faces and Renji-mado lattice on the east and west, to serve as a preparation room for food offerings.
A working space set inside a passage
Its number as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property is 25-0059, registered on 9 October 1998. Offerings of food are prepared in a dedicated building, and Omi Shrine has one, but a provisional space is also needed close to the innermost enclosure.
So two bays of what is otherwise a passage were walled in. Plank doors on the north and south keep the corridor usable end to end: open them and it is a walkway, close them and it is a room. Lattice on the east and west keeps the outward appearance of the corridor intact. From outside, these two bays do not read as a different building.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs records the floor area as 22 square metres including this room. The same area as the northern half, with a function added inside the enclosed part. That is why the registered name of Omi Shrine Wing Corridor, South notes the inclusion of the offering preparation room.
Looking for the two bays with doors
Omi Shrine Wing Corridor, South encloses the innermost precinct and is not open to visitors. Worship ends at the Outer Worship Hall.
The difference from the northern half can still be guessed from outside. Along a wall plane otherwise filled with lattice, two bays near the southern end carry door frames. Counting south from the Middle Gate, they are the third and fourth.
The roof runs as one unbroken gable, with no step over the enclosed part. Adding a room without altering the outline is one instance of how much this group of buildings cares about keeping its silhouette consistent. Photography in the grounds is unrestricted.
