A Reception Wing Built for a Mine Director
When Sumitomo Mining built a residence for the director of its Besshi Mining Office in Niihama, Ehime Prefecture, in 1937, the house came with something most homes lack: a separate building just for receiving guests. This reception annex, or osetsuto, stands connected to the main house by a covered corridor and was registered as a national Tangible Cultural Property on August 17, 2020, together with the main house, the tea room, and three other buildings of the Yamada company housing district.
The Besshi copper mine was the foundation of the entire Sumitomo enterprise, worked continuously from 1691 until its closure in 1973. Its director ranked among the most senior figures in Niihama, and his official residence, the largest in the district by both site and total floor area, was designed for the entertaining his position demanded. The annex covers 71 square meters and, like the rest of the compound, was renovated in 2018 and is now owned by Niihama City.
A Two-Tiered Entrance and a Western Parlor
The annex attaches to the western end of the main house's north face. It is a single-story wooden building under a gabled pantile roof, but its east front makes a small architectural performance: two hip-and-gable roofs project one above the other to shelter the entrance, a layered composition that announces this as the formal way in for visitors.
The walls are finished in white plaster with the timber frame exposed, over a lower band of clapboard. Inside, the eastern half holds the entrance and the connecting corridor, while the western half contains a Western-style drawing room and a wide veranda. A mine director in the 1930s received engineers, officials, and business partners here, in chairs rather than on tatami, before the party might move to the Japanese rooms of the main house or the tea room.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs registered the building under the criterion of serving as a model of architectural form, noting that annex and main house read as a single, carefully composed whole.
Walking Through the Director's Compound
The director's residence is one of the properties whose interiors Niihama City opens to the public. Visiting hours are Sundays from 10:00 a.m. to noon, every week from April through November and on the second and fourth Sundays from December through March. Admission is free, free parking is available, and groups of five or more should reserve two weeks ahead through the city's Besshi Copper Mine Cultural Heritage Division.
Approach the annex from the east to catch the stacked entrance roofs at their best, then follow the route inside from the formal entrance through the corridor toward the drawing room. The contrast between this Western parlor and the tatami rooms of the main house, reached through the same connecting corridor, compresses the dual etiquette of prewar corporate Japan into a few steps.
The 1935 Sumitomo Chemical executive house and the two 1930 foreign engineers' houses, also open on the same schedule, stand within easy walking distance, and the hilltop Higurashi Villa Memorial Museum overlooks the district.
